Baseball Offseason Workouts That Keep You in Shape
By Guido Nussbaum

Many of us are interested in making sure that we keep ourselves in good shape, and one of the ways for you to be able to do this is with some offseason workouts. This is especially true whenever you take part in a sport, and you want to make sure that you're going to be ready whenever the season comes up in the next year. There are some baseball offseason workouts that can help you to do this, and to get in the shape of your life at the same time. Not only is it good for your physical fitness level, and also keeps you active during a time of year whenever you could suffer from inactivity.

The type of workout that you're going to do really depends on the position of the field in which you play. For some people, the best offseason workout is going to be working their arms, so that they are able to throw the ball faster, further or more accurately. Arm exercises are excellent for you to do this, but you also need to keep in mind that you will be working out the entire body and utilizing it effectively whenever throwing the ball. That is why a particular type of exercise may be better than isolating the arms.

The type of exercise that I am talking about is a multi-joint exercise. These are weight training workouts, in which you will be doing exercises that work multiple parts of the body at one time. For example, the bench press is a very common exercise and although many people would think that this is only for the chest muscles, it actually works out the arms and even the abdominal region. There are other multi-joint exercises that may also benefit you as well.

Cardiovascular training is also a very important part of staying in shape and being ready for the next season. In order to do this, you will need to either walk, run or bike your way to fitness. You can do this out in the open, or if weather does not permit, you may like to do so in the gym using some of their exercise equipment.

Getting more out of your cardiovascular workout in a shorter amount of time is something that all of us would like. You can do this by doing high-intensity interval training, where you go hard for a period of time and then easy for an equal period of time. You will see a boost in your fitness level when you workout in this way.

Finally, you don't need to be a baseball player in order to enjoy some baseball offseason workouts. As a matter of fact, this type of overall body training is an excellent choice for anybody that wants to shed a few pounds or simply to look better and more lean. By doing these exercises, you're not only helping to condition the body for physical activity, you are giving it what it needs to stay in shape.

Baseball Exercises

Baseball Exercises
By Jim Bain

The thought of baseball exercises being important to young baseball players doesn't always get the proper amount of attention from coaches and parents that it should. It's somewhat understandable, as one equates youth with unlimited energy and abilities, but training should begin as early in a player's career as possible.

Ahhh, did you catch the word training instead of exercises? The difference in words, although they are interchangeable, shines a different light on the subject.

Players are never too young to begin a strengthening and conditioning program. In fact you are doing a disservice to the player waiting until he/she is 11 or 12 years old, because proper strength and muscle building requires time to develop and the longer you wait...the longer it takes for the player to catch up.

Let's look at some exercises through the terminology of training and Baseball specific.

Wind Sprints are a tried and true method of developing endurance as well as speed. Endurance is required to not only play 7 innings of baseball, but to be able to play 7 innings at peak performance level. Does an inside the park home run count for less in the 6th inning than the 1st? With a 0-0 score it is of equal importance, but if the level of performance has shriveled due to fatigue, the 6th inning run may not score.

Sprints in sets of 10, 30 to 40 yards in length will have the player(s) embarking on a quality endurance program. Having the players run the drills as a unit, such as pitchers together, catchers, infielders, etc. will also build a team unity which is invaluable during the course of a long season.

Squeezing racquetballs or tennis balls, is an excellent exercise for developing wrist, forearm and finger strength. The drill can be performed by the player anywhere at anytime without the need for a partner or any special weather conditions.

One may not realize, but strong fingers are a huge part of swinging a baseball bat. Think about it. You don't hold the bat in the palm of your hand, at least you better not, where there is no strength. You firmly clasp the bat in the fingers using the palms to merely keep the bat from falling out of your hand.

Strong wrist and forearms, which operate in conjunction with the hands, are the strength mechanisms which yield the snap and power of the wrist when swinging a bat or throwing a baseball.

These are but two exercises, or rather training exercises, which a young player needs to begin as soon as possible. Strength, endurance, team building and much more are accomplished through drills, exercises and training which is started young, with the intensity level increased as the player develops.

Extraordinary Bat Speed - 2 Best Exercises to Generate Serious Bat Speed!

By Brandon Richey

Once again the best way to increase the mph of your bat speed is to have a smart strength and conditioning program in place. Athleticism is built upon an individual having a powerful core, superior total body strength, and can train their body in a functional system. Check out the following 2 exercises that I have included here to help you with your hitting power!

1. The Double Arm Kettlebell Swing: By now you may be familiar with the ancient kettlebell and understand that this is an ancient strength and conditioning device that has been around for a long time. This device is second to nothing when helping any athlete develop a superior strength and conditioning program for optimal performance. The base lift of the kettlebell is the double arm swing. This single lift is tremendous in that it incorporates hundreds of your muscles at once and will help you to develop tremendous cardiovascular conditioning at the same time. This lift is done by you having to constantly flex and extend at both your hips and knees to build up the necessary momentum to swing the kettlebell from between your legs up to chest height. This is where you develop superior core strength, shoulder power, and total body conditioning to make swinging your bat seem easier than ever.

2. Kettlebell Figure Eights To A Hold: This is a dynamic drill that certainly strengthens your core, hips, and helps with a tremendous amount of trunk rotation which is absolutely necessary when it comes down to swinging that Louisville Slugger. To begin this drill set the kettlebell on the ground between your feet. Pick it up with one arm and flex at your hips and knees to swing or hike it between your legs. As you "hike it" between your legs simply pass the bell off to the other hand. As you grab the bell with the opposite hand bring it around to the outside of your leg at your body's side. As the momentum of the bell brings it to this point simply fire off and extend at your hip and knee and allow the momentum to assist you in swinging the bell across your body. As you swing it across your body simply catch it at your opposite pec (chest muscle) or shoulder. From here simply pass it back through your legs to repeat the process on the other side. This bat speed drill will certainly help you to enhance your hitting power. If you haven't gotten acquainted with kettlebell training then you are only holding back your progress. Remember that anyone can train hard, but only the champions train smart!
